Always begin with the end in mind. A trust has four primary characters – you, the grantor, the trustee (usually you), the successor trustee and the income and remainder beneficiaries. The more power you give the successor trustee, the better the trust can work, but the more likely your wishes may be altered to some extent. The more strict you are, the less the successor trustees can deal with unforeseen changes in the lives of your beneficiaries or the economy. You don't get both! Who you pick as the successor trustee makes all the difference in the world.
